West London Citizens aims to unite the voice of local congregations,
unions, schools, and associations across West London so that
we can promote the common good and act together for a better
tomorrow. Why? Because it is time to do something new.
Many people are disillusioned with politics. Few of us are
voting. Many would like to change things but feel powerless.
So those of us who haven't given up have decided to get together
and see what we can do.
West London citizens come from many diverse backgrounds.
We belong to different institutions- schools, congregations
(of all faiths) and unions. We all care about social justice
and want to see a more inclusive city. We know that we are
stronger and more effective together than apart. We seek out
and train leaders to bring new energy to our institutions.
We enable people to participate effectively in public life
and to bring about positive change in their neighbourhood.
Some people prize the "age of the individual",
yet many of us find our relationships are under pressure.
Some welcome the "age of choice", yet everyone,
down to the youngest child, is influenced by major corporations
and their marketing departments. The power of Government itself
is affected by a new global set of circumstances. Against
this trend West London Citizens are determined that the values
and concerns of ordinary people continue to be recognised
and acted upon. We are not content to leave it to chance.
We work and campaign for a better future. Although we are
just beginning, our roots are deep.
We draw from the rich history of citizens organising and
from the holy books of our faith traditions. Our sister network,
the East London Communities Organisation (TELCO) is ten years
old and nationally recognised for its pioneering achievements.
We are supported by the Citizen Organising Foundation (COF),
a charity with 15 years experience of broad-based community
organising. They provide the network to train and sustain
our professional Organisers.
Financial support from foundations and member organisations
is vital to our survival and independence. Each community
group in membership pays an annual due. This is matched by
funds from national denominations and foundations. A strong
dues base ensures our political independence and long term
viability.
